Non-Standardized Testing
Print

Most standardized motor oil testing procedues have very specific environmental variables that must be the same every time. However, certain tests can be performed with differing environmental variables.

If this is done, the differing variables should be listed along with the test description and results. For instance, the 4-Ball Wear Scar Test, the CCS and the MRV can all be run with differing variables (although the CCS and MRV should be the same within each viscosity grade). If testing variables are not listed, you SHOULD be able to assume that the testing was done using the standard required environmental variables for the test (as long as an ASTM # is given).

If you see test results that do not provide ASTM numbers, you have to assume that the testing is bogus (or you need to contact the company to verify). Without an ASTM number there is no way for any testing company, competitor or customer to verify the findings of the test because it is not reproducible. Some companies will include testing descriptions and results which sound like comparable tests, but without ASTM numbers you have to assume the testing is non-standard. You just can't be certain.

I hope that you see my point. There is no way that I could list all of the ways that companies try to color the truth with potentially misleading information. Just be careful. Don't let clever wording and hype sell you on an oil. Focus on whatever standard specifications the company will provide and compare them to those of other oils. There is no better way to justify the claims of a motor oil manufacturer.

Sorry, but I'm a little unsure of your actual question. Are you asking if I have technical data for this oil and whether I think it's a good product? I don't really have any information on it at present, but can investigate it for the next update to the database.
